Before our summer school – the Next STEP – gets underway on 24 June, associate professor Amanda Carrico, one of our visiting supervisors from the University of Colorado Boulder, will give a guest lecture as part of the Heymans Colloquium series.

Associate professor Carrico‘s academic seminar is titled “Who are the climate migrants?” and will focus on the role of social networks in climate induced mobility.

As climate change intensifies in the 21st Century, environmental stress is predicted to play a larger role in population mobility. Using survey data from the highly vulnerable nation of Bangladesh, associate professor Carrico examines the social and economic conditions in which households are most likely to use migration to cope with extreme weather. In the second half of this talk, Carrico will share her experiences as Deputy Editor of the journal Climatic Change, where she coordinates a team that manages submissions from environmental psychology. She will also discuss the journal’s orientation in this field, recent trends, and future directions for the journal.

The colloquium, which will be in English, is free and open to all. The hour-long lecture will start at 11 am on Friday, 21 June in room B.0126 in the Bouman building at Grote Rozenstraat 31 in Groningen.

About associate professor Amanda Carrico

Associate professor Carrico is Interim Chair and Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Trained as an environmental psychologist, Carrico’s research seeks to understand the social and psychological conditions that lead to pro-environmental action and policy support.

In a second line of work, her research group is examining behavioral responses to climate stress with an emphasis on migration and livelihood adaptations.

Dr. Carrico has led several international efforts to assess the impacts of and responses to environmental change in agricultural communities, including the Bangladesh Environment and Migration Survey (BEMS), which collects sociodemographic data about migration, livelihood activities, and climate stress in coastal Bangladesh.

Dr. Carrico is also Deputy Editor at the journal Climatic Change where she oversees a team of editors that handle manuscripts in the behavioral and psychological sciences.

About the Heymans Colloquium series

The Heymans Colloquia are a series of guest lectures by Dutch and foreign researchers on the invitation of staff members at the Heymans Institute for Psychological Research. Environmental psychology, along with eight other research units, is part of the Heymans Institute, which aims to understand human behavior from the biological to the societal level through interdisciplinary research.

The colloquium, and our faculty, are named in honor of Gerardus Heymans, a former professor of philosophy at the University of Groningen and a pioneer of psychology in the Netherlands, in particular experimental psychology.
